There was the sales for Gambit's solo that went into account, but I don't think you can lay the blame for the failure of an ensemble book on one character. It's like blaming Port and Guarascio for the way Community season four went, there were other factors involved.
As for the Carol Corps. and the digital numbers, that's where the Carol Corps. as a group begins to look bad. Only a few people would actually buy the book, but they'd then coordinate with the digital codes so that everyone still got the issue. Physical sales are a large part of the industry, that's what publishers look at first when they look at the sales, and because digital scumming the Corps. was engaging in, sales were down. While Bitch Planet was relatively high up on the totem pole, Captain Marvel was down with Lobo and Winter Soldier. Due to the way the codes work, you aren't buying the issue again digitally, it's just an added bonus for buying the physical copy. That's why Marvel books cost as much as they do (it's dumb, I know). When I realized this (from reading articles that I can't link to because I'm on my phone) my opinion of the Corps. changed and that was before I saw the allegations of racism within the group when it came to fans of Monica Rambeau and Monica herself.

Digital sales play a larger role than jelly gives them credit for (at least as far as I've seen and read), but they're still a small portion of overall sales. Most comics are still bought physically. I also agree that you can't blame one character for how an ensemble book sells. I would agree that Gambit isn't a sure thing as far as selling goes (no X-Man other than Wolverine is), but he also can't kill a book. The fact remains that the art was iffy to many people, the cast had too few A-listers, it wasn't well advertised, Peter David just doesn't sell like he used to (ageism in comics at its finest), and the book wasn't groundbreaking like his previous X-Factor run.
