Prelude #2
The Story of an Ant-Man and How He Came About Those Particles Known As Pym
Written by Jordan Miller

“Do you see that?” Hank Pym shouts in excitement, staring down through a small composition microscope. “Is that what I think it is?” He motions for his lab assistant, Brian Boremen, to look at what Hank had just discovered.
For the past six years of his life, Hank Pym had spent every spare moment searching for particles smaller than electrons, the particles that actually make-up electrons. And now, after years and years of study, a journey through the nucleus of hydrogen, and one really trippy summer night and Hank did it…he’d found Pym Particles.
“Hank…” Brian starts, looking into the eyepiece of the microscope. “Do you have any idea of the real world applications of these?” Brian turns, looking at Pym, his eyes quickly folding from excitement to greed. “These can move faster than anything we’ve ever seen before, faster than light! Weapons, armor, warriors! A new era of warfare! And we can make all the money!” This is not what Pym had intended any of this for.
“What has gotten into you, Brian?” Hank has known Brian for such a long, long time. Brian was the one that brought the project to him six years ago, telling him these particles, when manipulated correctly, could control everything from genetics to physics and back. He’d no clue Brian could think about warfare. “These are supposed to be for the betterment of man-kind, not sole greed!”
“We can help the world by helping them rebuild from the greatest war in humanity…hell, we can take it over with the money that we have, we can take the whole goddamned thing over, create a government that actually works! We can END war!” He reaches for the particles, greed completely overtaking him now.
“NO!” Hank shouts, grabbing the nearest chemical and throwing it at Brian. It misses by a hair, smashing into the slide with the Pym Particles. A flash of light and a cloud of strange gas fill the room.

A pain pierces my side, feels like a sword splitting into me. Must have been debris from the explosion. I grasp about my side, but I don’t feel anything sticky, nothing spurting from my side. How strange. It takes me up until this point to realize my eyes are closed, so I decide to open them.
My vision is suddenly filled with massive bursts of bright light. It doesn’t take me long to deduce that something is moving so fast that it is past the point where it is invisible, it is so fast it is emitting light of it’s own. My eyes take too long to adjust, and I come to just before one of the objects crashes into me.
I stare at it as it speeds away.
Pink outline.
White membrane.
Orange nucleus visible from the outside.
Pym Particles.
Somehow that explosion has shrunk me down to smaller than my Pym Particles. I wonder what it did to Brian? Is he in here with me? “Brian?!” I yell at the top of my voice. Air escapes my lungs, but there is no sound. The particles move so fast that they have created a vacuum.
I begin wading my way through, attempting to figure out where my air supply comes from in this vacuum. I absorb the environment around me: the lights being emitted from the PPs, the speed at which they move, the white nothingness that is everything but the particles…it’s all so fascinating.
But…that’s when I get my first true glimpse of the light they emit. It’s something special, unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. In these flashes of sudden light, that I now realize for the first time to appear silver, I see something I never would’ve thought I’d see.
Me, standing atop a tower, battling with a Hulking figure, a giant, green/grey hulking figure. He shouts at me, but I can’t hear him. I shout back. Still nothing.
That strangest thing was the monster’s face—he had the features of my best friend, Brian Boremen. What has happened? Is it possible that, when I was shrunk down, he was grown?
But that was just a single flash of light. The next one brought a man in such a sophisticated suit, leading a group of rather shady looking fellows to bring doom to another, rather heroic looking group. It is all-out war, and I’m in the middle of it. Me and Brian both.
Is this the future? Are these particles moving so fast that they emit light that normal people won’t get to see for weeks, months, hours, years? What are all the secrets of the Pym Particles?
I cannot mess around here any longer; I have a job to do. I have to warn someone, anyone, and stop this from happening. How do I get out of here? Is it possible that…maybe, just maybe, I can…
I reach my hand out towards an incoming particle and us two entities collide, and energy flows through me. I feel the power rushing through my veins, I’m getting bigger, bigger, bigger…
*
Brian Boreman awakens far away from where he blacked out, somewhere in a desolated metropolis. He looks around, not quite sure of what brought him here. Pools of blood forming feet-deep in the crater in which he stands. All around him a perimeter of soldiers stands, guns at the ready to blow his head off at the slightest movement. This was Pym’s fault. Suddenly, a flash of light, and the pops of hundreds of shots fired.
Brian awaits the bullets to meet impact with his skin, but they never do. Even the sound lessens in seconds. Above him hovers a man in a suit of pure technology. “Who are you?!” Brian screams, reaching for the intruder’s throat. He is deflected by a force-field, landing on his butt and hands in pools of blood.
“I am a man on a mission to save the future, and you are my agent of change, Brian Banner.”
