ALL STAR MARVEL PROUDLY PRESENTS
“The mission is simple, Nick,” Alexander Pierce stood in front of a smart board marked over with a map, “Get in, disarm the bomb, and get out.”
Nick Fury grinned, cigar in his mouth, “Sounds like a Friday night to me.”
“Don’t treat this like a joke. That bomb’s the real deal. We aren’t even sure just how powerful it is, but we do know that HYDRA plans to use it to attack D.C. in a week,” Pierce said.
“I got it, believe me, Director,” Nick stood up, “I’ll go get Lola.”
“Nick…”
Fury stopped at the door. “Yes, sir?”
“Kick some HYDRA ass for me, will you?”
“Always, Director,” Nick left the room, “Nick Fury, agent of SHIELD out.”

1985: The Timebomb
Nick Fury crouched against the side of a wall as two HYDRA soldiers walked past on the other side. This was it. The best HYDRA had to offer. Chumps.
Nick jumped out from behind the wall and shot both the HYDRA agents in the head with his silenced pistol. Yeah, definitely chumps.
Nick continued down the hall, pistol in hand. Forty meters further down the bomb was stationed in its own room, locked away from the world. Four guards stood at the doorway. Easy pickings.
Nick pulled a small box from his utility belt and pulled the lever. The sounds of bullets shouting and screams echoed from the box. Nick set it down and hid behind a corner as the HYDRA guards ran towards the sounds.
As soon as the guards reached the box, Nick clicked a switch and the thing blew. All four were out before they could scream ‘hail HYDRA.’
“Gimme those two new heads already,” Nick joked, “This is too easy.”
Nick approached the bomb room. It was locked with a hypogamma ultralock. The thing blew if you entered the wrong code. Lucky for Nick, he was never wrong.
He pulled a walkie talkie out from his pocket and held it in front of the lock. The walkie talkie extended outwards towards the lock, producing a small satellite dish. The walkie talkie’s screen lit up with eight numbers. The lock clicked and the door opened.
Nick peaked inside the bomb room, expecting a full scale nuclear bomb. What he found was much, much worse.
Inside lay a device so massive and so advanced Fury couldn’t even guess the energy source or its creator. Standing by the bomb stood a man, aloof, wearing green and black armor even more high tech than the bomb. His unique, sleek outfit was finished with a short black cape hanging over his shoulders.
“This device holds the future and the destruction of mankind. Without it, we are finished. Without it, we are saved. Its origin is alien, its abilities unique. This bomb can change everything. It is the Timebomb…Nick Fury.”
Until this point, Nick thought he had gone unnoticed. This was clearly not the case. He drew his pistol.
“Who the hell are you? You with HYDRA?”
“HYDRA? No,” the man replied, “My allegiance lies with humanity. I am known by many names, but the one name you shall call me by is Kang.”
“Do you know what this is?” Nick didn’t put his gun away. Something about this Kang was off.
“Of course. This is the Timebomb, but despite its name it is anything but a bomb. This device is powered by the reality altering Cosmic Cube and makes use of the tachyon molecules known as Pym Particles. It exists in all times at once. Its owner…its creator is an alien-robot hybrid by the name of Ultron, and he means to eliminate the human race,” Kang explained.
“What?” Nick lowered his pistol unconsciously, “Who the hell is Ultron and why does he…”
BOOM!
The room quaked as light enveloped everything. From nowhere appeared a large robotic being with a head shaped like an ant’s.
{I am Ultron.} the robot announced, {and I am here to terminate you, Kang.}
“Nick, I need you to trust me…set the Timebomb off!” Kang flew towards Ultron, “It is the only way!”
“What? I can’t--!” Nick stood still, frozen by the titanic clash that occurred before him. The two beings from the future met fist with fist and laser with laser. What the hell had he gotten himself into?
{Why do you fight me, Kang?} Ultron demanded, {I seek only to better the universe. My creator, your friend, Hank Pym wanted me fix everything. I am. By using the Timebomb to eliminate the human race in every timeline I shall rid the multiverse of your chaotic species and save everything and everyone.}
“You really can’t see how that would upset me?” Kang quipped, firing a blast of repulsor energy only to do nothing against Kang’s shields. “Why, Kang, why do you do this? You’ll wipe yourself from reality as well!”
{I will die a martyr} Ultron retorted.
“We can agree on one thing, Ultron! You will die!” Kang’s armor began to glow and the room started to shake.
{You think to eliminate me using Pym Particles? How silly. How…human. I too control the Pym Particles,} Ultron lifted his hand. Kang’s armor slowly started to darken.
“No! NO!” Kang roared, blasting Ultron with energy. The robot remained unphased.
Suddenly, everything clicked for Nick Fury. He had no idea what the hell was going on, but he knew one thing, that robot was not good news. He ran over to the Timebomb and began flipping switches. The machine began to glow.
“Hey, tinhead, over here!”
Both machinemen looked over.
{No…human designate Nicholas Joseph Fury, stop what you are doing,} Ultron lifted his hand towards Fury, taking his focus off of Kang. Ultron fired a repulsor blast at Nick, who dived out of the way.
“Bless you, Fury!” Kang cried out in joy. His armor lit up and he shouted.
“Ultron, you’re finished!”
The robot swiveled back around to Kang.
{No, Kang, it is you who has lost,} Kang fired a repulsor blast. The energy beam went straight through Kang’s stomach as his armor continued to light up, all its energy focused on its current objective.
“On the contrary…for the first time…I’ve won,” Kang’s armor exploded into energy and formed an eery green circle around Ultron.
{What have you done? Kang. I--}
Ultron disappeared in a flash of light, leaving the now-naked Kang to look at his victory.
“You’re hurt!” Nick ran to Kang’s side, and helped him up, “You’re…Howard Stark?”
“Ha. No,” Kang coughed up blood, “I’m his son, actually. My name is…”
“Tony,” Nick realized, “I was there at your birth.”
Kang smiled, “Yeah…I haven’t been called that in a long time. I forgot how…nice it was. Now, please, help me to the Timebomb.”
“But Ultron is defeated—“
“Trapped in the timestream,” Nick agreed, “But his drones remain alive in our future, and he’s bound to break out again. This is the only way to guarantee victory.”
Nick took a deep breath, and then decided to do the unthinkable. He helped Kang to the Timebomb. With his help, Kang managed to arm the bomb, causing Nick for the first time since the man from the future appeared to think of his mission.
“Where are the HYDRA agents?”
“Dead.”
“Oh,” Nick nodded his approval, “You’re good.”
“I once was…and I may be again,” Tony agreed, collapsing onto the ground. Color faded from his eyes and tears fell down his cheeks. All this time, all the wars he ‘d fought with the Avengers, with himself, with Ultron…it was over. He’d won. He’d really won. His son, Nathan, Hank, Steve, Janet, Valeria, Miles…maybe they could all find peace in this new future…this new time.
Nick sat on the ground next to the dying Kang as the Timebomb hummed next to them.
“What happens next?” Nick asked.
Kang smiled, “I don’t know. For the first time in a thousand lifetimes…I don’t know.”
And the light faded from Kang’s eyes as the light faded from the universe. With one final boom, everything ended…
And begun anew.
