I know we did this before, but I felt like updating it for the new site!
Name:
Chris
Where Are You Based?:
Rochester, New York
Age:
25
What do you do?:
Legal Assistant at a Law Firm
Hobbies and/or interests:
Reading & Writing, of course. Comic Books, History (I love combining the two), & music. I'm actually playing keyboards in a modern folk band right now, which is super fun.
How long have you been writing?
I've been telling stories as long as I can remember and writing them down for almost as long. I had the Fisher Price Castle and Pirate Ship playsets as a kid and named all of the characters and told stories about them. I only began to write seriously when I joined the original Ultimate DC when I was like 14.
Do you write anything non-fan fiction?
Yes. Not as much as I'd like though. I have a ton of ides for stories swimming around and I'm slowly chipping away at them.
What are your main inspirations when writing?
Music is a big one. It can really help you see a scene in a way that the quiet can't. I also saw Neil Gaiman speak recently and he spoke of the nature of ideas. I don't know why, but I've been on an idea train since I saw him. Stuff keeps coming to me. He said that a good story comes from two completely separate ideas come together. He said it much more poetically though.
Would you like to write for a comic company?
I woud. Perhaps not the Big 2, but it'd be cool to do some Image work. But if someone offered me work on Batman, who wouldn't take it?
Who is your favorite comic author? Novel author?
Comics - Chris Claremont, Jack Kirby, Grant Morrison, Brian K. Vaughan, Jonathan Hickman, Mark Waid, Greg Rucka
Novels - Neil Gaiman, Mark Twain, George Orwell, John Steinbeck, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Who is your favorite comic characters? Marvel? DC? Other?
DC - Starman (Jack Knight), The Flash (Wally West), Dick Grayson in all forms, Stargirl, Alan Scott. And Batman stands apart as the single most important character in comics to me.
Marvel - Magneto, Shadowcat, Silver Surfer, Jean Grey, Professor X. Very X-Men heavy, I know.
Other - I pay more attention to concepts rather than characters on Indie titles. I'm really loving every character in Saga right now though. Marko, Alana, Izabel, The Will, Hazel. Even the villains are done in a compassionate way.
What is your favorite comic story? Marvel? DC? Other?
DC - Morrison's Batman Epic, New Frontier, Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?, The Entirety of Robinson's Starman and Johns/Robinson/Goyer's JSA
Marvel - Days of Future Past, Mark Waid's Fantastic Four (Through Hereafter), Marvels, Lee & Ditko's Spider-Man
Other - I'm really digging Saga right now. I haven't read too many indies that have already completed, so I don't think I can answer this realistically.
What moment in comic history most influenced you/made you a comic fan?
X2: X-Men United. I loved the cartoons as a kid and loved the movies as a tween (granted, I only had like 3 decent ones to choose from back then), but X2 was so good, I decided start reading the comics regularly.
First Comic You Remember Reading?
I had a lot of random comics floating around my house when I was a kid. I remember Star Trek and Star Wars ones specifically. I think I had some X-Men and Batman comics too. But the first comic I remember reading was Uncanny X-Men #421 which coincidentally featured Alpha Flight. Unfortunately, it was by Chuck Austin. Thankfully I survived the experience. And it proved to be just a gateway drug.
Why did you choose your character(s) to write?
I originally wanted to do X-Men and when it looked like it would be super contested, I started to think of other ideas. Alpha Flight just clicked for me. Everything came together really well in terms of the personality dynamics between the characters. And that's what's most important to me.
What character that you did not claim would you like to try your hand at most?
I do have a mutant story in the back of my head and thankfully a lot of my favorite mutants are still available. That may be the only title I have real interest in available. Black Panther, Silver Surfer and Moon Knight are all claimed.
