"Just press the comm button if you need us. The meal plan is on the wall with times and locations. The grounds are open from sunup to sundown, and there are a number of events you'll be invited to." The nurse cheerfully put their things in the room. ""There's one mandatory group session a day, but other then that you can do what you like. We just want to help you heal here."
Wanda rolled her eyes as the woman finished setting up the room, nearby Pietro was in his wheel chair and looking to her for direction, still far more phased then she was.
"That's the last of it. You have one visitor to see but after that I'd recommend the gardens. The most beautiful part of the whole place. I'll send her in." She left quickly.
Wanda was suddenly a little worried, they didn't have any family left, the entire caravan had been burned and destroyed. The only visitors they had gotten until then were medical personnel.
The door opened and Wanda saw Pietro begin to panic a little. A woman entered, she was tall and thin, with brown hair and very stern military posture. In the camp they were taught to stay away from anyone in a uniform, Pietro's panic got stronger.
"Agent Grey didn't get to him?" The woman asked simply. Wanda wanted to respond with a wise crack but was unable to. She could only shake her head that the red head from before hadn't. "I'll see to it, best for everyone."
The woman looked around the room and seemed to be taking notes. Wanda, unsure of what was going on, she looked over the activities, nodded at the map of the grounds, and actually almost smiled. Almost.
"Okay, it's better." She nodded. "I'll have to congratulate them."
"Who?" Wanda was now standing in front of her brother. Their visitor seemed to be startled by the intrusion.
"Agent Grey and the good Doctor. They gave this place a complete overhaul, changed nearly everything." She looked impressed. "Excellent work as ever, but I'd accept no less. Agent Hill, Commander to you. Head of the X-wing of SHIELD. You pulled a red flag."
"We were taken here, we had nothing to do with it. If it's a problem we'll go anytime." Wanda didn't feel the courage but Pietro was beginning to shake.
"Two minutes, not bad." The Commander turned and looked at the two. "You might even measure up. Maybe."
"You don't know what we can do. I bet you're a normal." The Commander smirked.
"Need some serious discipline though." She said softly to herself. "You were attacked by an on foot group of the Friends of Humanity. They killed your parents, your family and burned your caravan. You were held and made to watch as they slaughtered each person before they turned on you. Don't look surprised, I was there."
"You were-" Pietro was suddenly paying attention.
"Yes. Now, an experience like that. It has one of two effects. Either you let it break you, or you let it make you. You don't strike me as a breaker so I'll betting on the second. I'll count you as a possibility."
"For what?" The twins looked at each other.
"I probably shouldn't even mention it." She had their attention. "I'm the leader of a unit, Mutant based. We find mutants like yourself and pull them out. Try to cut into the Friends action as it were. But we're top shelf, nothing but the best. Have to be, hit hard, get them out, go home. No excuses. Most people aren't up to it. Best if I didn't get my hopes up over you two."
"You take out the Friends?" Pietro sat up sharply. "How?"
"However we have to. If they agree to come in we make sure they don't see light of day again. If they refuse, well, it really is self-defense. There's nothing we can do to help that." Agent Hill was looking over their medical charts. "And this is war, things do happen. But you both are too hurt right now to really be considered. Walking at least is expected."
Pietro looked at the chair and Wanda could feel him willing his legs to work again, at the moment they were far too weak from recovering from surgery.
"I'll check in, see if you end up stacking up. Likely won't, but you never know." The woman put down the chart, she didn't seem to concerned. "Anyway, work with the people here, don't skip meetings, make nice with the counselors. We might talk later."
She left as simply as she had entered, leaving the two to look at the door even after she left.
"I want to join that team." Pietro said behind her. Wanda had to agree.
"I need to make them bleed. What do we do first." Pietro pulled the list off the table.
"Group meeting in ten, we need to go." Pietro motioned and Wanda hurried to get behind the chair. The Commander would expect perfect attendance.
"The one of you and Maria at the barbecue, Alex is his official uniform and Jubilee's chocolate cake." Scott happily put the frames on the new surfaces around the room. The project, which was not as easy as the article had suggested, was finally done.
Jean, away from the healing Jubilee, the stern Maria or the still uncertain Rogue was sitting on the bed with her knees pulled into her chin. This was the Jean he got to see, the one she hid from the team. Today he knew was hard for her, the anniversary of her parents death was always a painful day. The rooms were done, living room, bedroom and two bathrooms finished, she otherwise would have been thrilled. The spare room there was no use for, so they had saved money and left it bare. Instead their new found happiness was tainted.
"Want to visit?" He walked to the survivor. She looked up and smiled a little. "I can sign out the jet."
She didn't speak but instead he felt warm gratitude, it was easier if she didn't talk at moments like this. It was an understanding, they each got like this from time to time/ Jean when visions of her parents haunted her thoughts, and him on the anniversary of his parents abandonment. They were team leaders, examples to those under them, answering to those over them. They could only take the mask off when they were alone.
He sat down and pulled her close. She settled into his neck and they rested. He saw flashes in his mind, the things she missed. Christmas morning walking into the living room, friday night dinner helping her father carry in the pizza and sides, going with her mother to the opening of shows at the museum, the three of them curled on the sofa watching tv at night. Her shift from doted middle class daughter to SHIELD junior agent had been sudden, and traumatic. It had left her mentally damaged, a real danger in a mutant of mental prowess. Really, as team leader, h
is was his job to help her heal if he could.
"I know," He kissed her forehead, steeling himself. "How about this?"
He recalled scenes he'd been daring to think about in the last few months. Coming back from a honeymoon, buying a house off base, visiting home supply stores to make it into a home. A few years later coming home with a baby carrier, and having their own small family wander into the living room to a decorated tree heavy with gifts on Christmas morning. Cuddles as a family to watch tv or playing video games, before bedtime stories and time to look at a house littered with toys and life.
"Build it with me, Jean. Together we can make any future we want." She looked up with her bright green eyes still shocked, but a quickly growing smile. Tears leaked out but she laughed and grabbed him into a heated kiss.
"Yes, yes to it all. When can we start?" Scott caught his breath as she wrapped legs around him, un willing to let him go just then. This was fine by him, his side table was in reach. He grabbed the small box and opened it.
"Does now work?'
"Place is dead." Jubilee said as she jumped over the tremors Alex was causing in the ground, she got why he had been so readily accepted into the group now. "This normal?"
"Sometimes. I mean, Jean takes the day off, but I don't know about the rest." Alex used a blast to get himself out of the way of her sparks. "It's not unheard of."
"Rogue is with her Mom, and Scott ran off with Jean. Maria said she had a visit." The room depowered and they waited for the next level to set up. "Guess I'm still learning."
"Jean's parents were killed ten years ago today, she's not in the best shape right now. It's best to let my brother take this one, Jean is nice but that head of her can get scary when she gets off balance." The keypad beeped and Alex went to put in the new settings.
"I had no idea, I'm sorry." Jubilee looked down, remembering the shared memory. That it was so near the surface before made sense now. "Can we help?"
"Scott can help, the rest of us follow his lead." Alex smiled at his companions concern. "He has a direct feed into her head, always has. He'll let us know. At least she's better then she was, that's something."
"How bad was-What's that!" Jubilee jumped, Alex doing much the same.
"It's a level three, invaders in the base, suit up." Alex sprinted down the hallway to his brother's room where there was noise on the other side of the door. Manners would have to wait, he pushed open the door.
"On it, what do we know?" Scott was wrapping up his uniform, quickly changing from the daily red lense glasses to the battle ready eye bar.
"Only the siren, Jubilee ran ahead to-" Scott went pale.
"She's not an agent yet, just training." His brother raced to the from room, in the battle focus that Alex knew too well.
"You left her out there alone?" Jean, pulling on her gloves and enhancing headband followed after. "Alex, you know better."
"I'm still getting used to it, Jeez." They ran to the room where the battle was officially started. Jubilee was being held by a military MP, he was restraining her, and she wasn't sure if she should use her powers to free herself or not.
"Havok, seal the entrance. Jubilee, practice four." Jubilee quickly moved, stepping on the mans feet. Distracted the man loosened his grip, and Jubilee shocked the utility belt and the man fell to the floor.
"Who are these people?" She ran to her teammates. "They're just the outside guards."
"Were, they've been taken over. Knock them out, but don't hurt them." Jean looked over the group. "I know who they're fighting for, hold the line and let me focus."
"You heard the woman, go." Scott ran forward.
More guards hurried in, they had grabbed the guns from the security house and were aiming for the team. Scott nodded to Jean and she focused for a moment before the men and woman put the weapons on the ground before charging.
The first guard threw a punch, but it was a but late. The officer quickly dodged, she was still a SHIELD agent. He had to be careful not to hurt them, they were allies and friends. He punched one in the jaw, hard. She went down, but her partner became enraged and took two sharp swings, one connected. Ignoring his now hurting gut Scott pulled the man second woman into a headlock and waited for her to fall from lack of air. The two would have headache in the morning, it was a small price.
Nearby Alex was dealing with the flood of people that were now entering, three more and more to come. If these were friends or sentinels the fight would have been easy, they would be taken out. As these were victims in their own right SHIELD training required kid gloves be used.
"Jubs, secure the door. We need to stop them." He looked at Scott who was using the mop handle to dance around three officers, two more would be with him within moments.
"How?" Jubilee was sparking her person, using the pressure points she had been studying.
"Put it into lock down, just put the wrong code in a few times." She nodded, hurrying to the key pad. The room took on a new aura as the was filled with blue blinking lights.
"Good call, Alex." Scott used the end of the stick the poke the two in the gut, they finally went down. He hurried to help his younger brother with the Alex's two, his last following.
"Your three!" Alex moved just in time to give Scott time to dodge and avoid the brass knuckle that had come out of nowhere. Jubilee returned, once again sparking a guard. "How is Jean doing?"
Scott looked over and paled noticeably, looking himself Alex did as well. Jean was kneeling on the ground and in a deeper focus then she had used in ages. She was trying to break the bonds on the guards, protecting her team and looking for a chink in the intruder's armor. A small trail of blood was falling from her nose. She was starting to sway.
"Wrap this up." Scott said, now slightly panicked. "Don't have forever."
Jubilee had staled for a moment at the sight of her mentor, but jumped into the fight with renewed energy. Before Scott could stop her Jubilee had zapped the spinal cords of two of them, Alex knocked the third out.
At that moment the door turned green and they heard running steps getting closer. The three hurried to the telepath, instinctively forming a human shield against whoever was coming. Alex wasn't surprised when he saw Scott turn his eye piece to stun, just sorry for who ever was about to try to reach them.
"Friendly, we're friendly's!" Maria's voice said before she ran in, she was fighting a number of guards. "The White Queen is here, we need shut her down."
"How?" Alex was helping Scott move the redhead to a chair so she had one less thing to worry about.
"Jubilee, could you pulse the alarm system for the base? I need the reset siren." She nodded and ran top speed to the back halls where the operational room was, Maria spoke to the brothers. "How is she?"
"Not good." Scott said simply, not happy.
"Almost done here. Logan, in here!" She took the tall, muscular man's appearance in stride, but the brothers did not. They could hear the running of more guards but the mountain man stood in the doorway, blades suddenly extending from his hands.
"If you want it, bitch." The man yelled into the seemingly empty air. "But I know exactly how to find you."
There was a stir in the air and it all went still for a moment. The running stopped. The guards that Maria was keeping at bay went wavy and fell to the ground. Jean's eyes opened wide for a moment before blacking out and falling into the sofa. A loud, sheering siredn came over the air and the last of the tendrils were washed away.
"Who is that?" Alex asked, Scott was busy making sure Jean was alright.
"This is Logan." Maria said as she hurried to do the same. "New member. This isn't good, pupal response is way too slow. Pulse is struggling, I don't like this. We need the doc. Alex, open the hanger bay."
"Telepath, isn't she?" Logan asked, looking at Scott as he picked up the form. "Emma wants her gone, I'd bet. Never did much like competition."
"Go now. Alex, Jubilee, go with him. Keep an eye on her till you arrive." She was looking at the name tags of the officers on the floor. "Quickly, Scott. We'll hold the fort here. She needs the Doc."
"Hurry, she's in here." Wanda hurried to the room at the end of the hall, reserved for SHIELD officers and VIPs. The staff was working elsewhere. Peitro, now on crutches, was close behind. "We need her to back us up."
Tired but eager to make his case he hurried after as his sister stopped at the door and gripped the door handle. She eagerly but slowly turned the knob. Inside the woman they has seen come in was wrapped into the bed with a number of the monitors they had been connected to themselves. She was pale, and seemed to be weak, but the small tray of badges next to the bed told them what they needed to know, this was Agent Grey, the second in line of the X-Factor command and noted mentalist.
"She's hurt." Peitro said softly. "We should come back later."
"No, they'll be crawling over her again." Wanda was careful to avoid any wire as she got closer. "We have to move now."
Peitro moved next to his sister, also careful. Wanda tapped the hand with fewer IVs a few times before the heavy eyelids opened. The green eyes were there, still vibrant. She was awake, but confused, and very tired.
"I'm Wanda, remember?" Agent Grey nodded a little. "This is Peitro, my brother. We need your help."
Agent Grey moved her head slightly, wincing. They had her attention.
"We lost everything." Wanda said, pushing back the memories and tears.. "They need to pay. Please, help us get on the team. Let us help." Next to her Peitro gripped the handles tightly, also looking at her.
Agent Grey looked at them, an understanding grimace on her lips. When she spoke it was very carefully. They had to strain to hear her fully,
"I know what that's like, I'm sorry." Her voice was soft, is must have been hard to even whisper. This time Wanda believed her. "You'll have to pass the exams, and impress the team, but I'll help however I can."
Wanda rolled her eyes as the woman finished setting up the room, nearby Pietro was in his wheel chair and looking to her for direction, still far more phased then she was.
