The second panel of the FanCon will begin!!!
However, Stardrifter hasn't been on the site for over a month now, and Fallen Angels has been dropped, so we'll probably be cutting this a bit short and starting the Edge panel early.
For now, though, The Amazing Spider-Man is up! We'll start tonight off with the interview, and I'll tease just a tad more tomorrow.
FYI this interview was sent to me prior to the publication of issues 14 and 15.
1. Everyone loves Rich. Any hints as to what to expect for him in the future?
You'll get to see a bit of his past, and why he's turned out the way he has. You'll be given hints about why he's having headaches and nightmares. Eventually, he'll get his own character-focused arc where everything I've been planning for him comes to fruition. I won't spoil how.
Of course, he'll also just be hilarious. I think that's pretty important too.
2. The Other is an odd storyline that Spider-Man fans are very divided on. What drove you to adapt this storyline in particular for the All-Star Universe?
Originally, I was looking for a character to finish out the Sinister Six, and I really wanted one who could beat Peter in terms of pure physical strength. From there, I eventually found Black Tarantula, and played around with the notion that the two were connected (because a bunch of random Spider-people is weird), which naturally lent itself to The Other. However, I then planned a more complex arc that has a bit of a twist about the whole "The Other" and "The Spider" concepts.
I just want to say that I dislike the concept of Peter as a Spider-totem. It can be used well, but it defeats the purpose of his "everyman who suffered an accident that changed his life forever" background, which is arguably the most integral part of his character. Peter shouldn't be destined to be Spider-Man, right? He isn't destined to be a hero? Right? Well, after this arc, you tell me. Has he always been a hero? Was he always going to be a hero? And was his superpowered fate predestined? Again, I'll leave most of that open to you. The last question will be answered, and I think everyone will pleased with how I handle it.
3. When will we find what the deal is with Spider-Woman?
I'm not quite sure what's being asked here, but if the question's asking, generally speaking, when will we discover her origin, motivations, and who her partner (Home Base) is, then the answer is soon. Very soon. The next arc is split almost 50-50 Gwen and Peter. You find out who Home Base is in the opening scene. You get some serious hints about her origin, where she got the tech, why she got it, why she's a hero, etc. The full story will be revealed in not the next arc after that (Sinister Six), but the one following it.
4. Can Peter still be called an "everyman" now that he is essentially a "corporate shill" for OsCorp?
That's a very, very good question. I'm really glad you asked that.
Basically my entire run has been about and will be about deconstructing Spider-Man. Is his path predestined? If so, does this still make him an everyman? Can he be an everyman, can he be Spider-Man when he has a consistent income, amazing (no pun intended) resources, and the city on his side? What makes Spider-Man Spider-Man? What makes Peter himself? What does it mean to be an everyman? What does it mean to be a hero? I don't want to provide any answers just yet, either on my personal beliefs or what I intend with this story. I'll leave it up to you guys for now. You tell me. What does it mean to be ordinary? What does it mean to be extraordinary? Who is Peter Parker? How far can you go before your essence, your being is corrupted? And can you overcome that corruption?
[Joke Question] 5. What's better Peter/MJ or Peter/Gwen? Ooh, or Gwen/MJ?
Personally, I'm a Peter/MJ guy, but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate any of the above. I mean, I'm not shoving PJs (totally made that up) down your throats....yet. On that note, you can expect some more MJ in the future. Her and Peter, however, as a couple? Not in this "season" of the story, at least. This season's romance subplot is about Peter and Gwen entirely.
Actually, here's a fun teaser. Rich and MJ are going to have their own romance subplot. Harry won't get one till Season Two. I have a much more important subplot in mind for him.
