In the first post for the Author Interview Column I hope to start on this board, we take a look into the mind of the writer of the upcoming Avengers event, Drake!
This was Drake's idea, and I hope it works wonders.
Here goes:
How soon will it be until we get to see the first issue of the announced Prelude to Avengers mini?
Well, this is an easy one to start out on. Prelude to the Avengers #1: Featuring Kang, the Conqueror will be released in one to two weeks.
What are your feelings about the editorial staff (Silentking and myself) on the board?
They're really, really cool. Being accepted like I was...am...was kind of cool, and the fact they didn't just ignore me when I came to them with different ideas on how to boost the input and output of the site was really awesome! I mean, to be honest, if I were in their position I think I might actually have just told the person to screw off, because what I was saying would dramatically change the site, such as the reboot to Spider-Man, and yet still they welcomed me and my ideas with open arms!
Now, can you tell us just how this event came to be? Where did the idea come from?
Hm...I can't get really specific because I don't know ALL the details, but Jordan came to me and the other writers on the site with this idea for a massive event that would feature the origin of the Avengers. We (the authors) were going over the story of the Avengers and who would be on the team when I sort of just threw out the idea for Kang to attack the team for causing [SPOILERS] the end of the human race. And then it grew. As a group we decided that Kang would assemble the [EXTRACTED], would attack each member individually at first, and that Kang would secretly be [EXTRACTED].
As for how I came up with the original plot line...well, to be honest, the origins are fairly humble and expected. I was taking a shower (where I, coincidentally come up with my best ideas) when it just hit me. Admittedly, at that time I hadn't joined the site yet and the plot would have been for a different Avengers story with different characters. And so, when we started discussing the Avengers, it hit me. I'd never written that story, and it'd always been on my mind, so I pitched it. And who would've known, everyone loved it!
Who's the line-up going to be for the All-Star Avengers?
Captain America (Steve Rogers), Iron Man (Tony Stark), Hulk (Bruce Banner), Hank Pym, Wasp (Janet van Dyne), Human Torch (Johnny Storm), Spider-Man (Miles Morales), and Pulsar (Monica Rambeau).
I couldn't ask for a better cast of characters. Such a wide variety of personalities and powers...it's really great! And it ties together most of the stories on the site! And for those of you wondering why Pym has no superhero ID...well...I don't know the answer to that either! I've not been informed on "which Pym" I'm getting. Haha!
How did you come about the task of writing this title for the launch arc?
We've talked about this already, but I pitched the story and was nominated to write it. And I can't express in words how much of an honor it is to be in charge of this opening event.
Will this tie into your Spider-Man title?
Well...I don't know how to answer this without spoiling anything. I guess I'll say yes and no. There will definitely be ramifications of this event felt in Spider-Man, but no, it won't directly tie in. I'm not going to ignore what happens in Avengers, if that's what you're asking. The event is definitely a big stepping stone in Miles' career as a hero.
What major changes will be made to characters such as Miles Morales and Doctor Octopus?
As for personality for Miles: none. He'll be like...well...Miles Morales. Just my take, so obviously a bit different than BMB's. Well, I guess that isn't entirely true. Miles will be a bit more reckless and outgoing as Spider-Man because...well, I can't really tell you yet. Just read on.
The supporting cast will also have plenty of big changes! I think Tommy Fireheart (that's what I call him and what his nickname is in the series) and Max Dillon will have the biggest changes to history and personality. Doc Ock (Otto Octavius) is dead, so there's that. He sure as hell isn't Spider-Man too. But...there will [SPOILERS] be a new Doc Ock. And [SPOILERS] it's a she.
Is Peter a totem like JMS' run or was it a radioactive spider-bite gone wrong?
Radioactive spider bite. It's the classic origin and definitely something I wanted in the series. And, as you'll see, Miles origin will reflect Peter's but in a newer, modern climate. Peter's will be changed some too. Just not in ways you might expect.
Just one last question: In one year, where do you see this board?
God...that's tough. So much can happen in a year. What I hope? This site triples in size and grows to be bigger than the sister site, Ultimate DC. What I expect? The site grows slowly. We gain new writers and slowly become a massive fan fiction site. What I really, really hope doesn't happen? Avengers and the sort-of reboot blows up in all of our faces and the site and all the series are cancelled. But that's unlikely. Everyone on the site cares too much to let that happen. And I promise you all, the readers, I will do everything in my power to keep this site alive while giving you quality material. And I'm talking "better than most of what you read from Marvel" quality. And I'm sure all of my fellow authors would say the same.
Expect great things from this site. Goodbye, good night, good day, and...
Excelsior!
Those are his words in their entirety (except for the first [EXTRACTED]), so there you go!
If you have questions you want answered
/specific writers you want to hear from, a little more insight etc. feel free to ask for it, and you shall be answered.
Thanks,
Jordan
